The Mental Traveller - Bram Kinsbergen
Everyday Gallery 29.01.2022 - 16.03.2022

In Focus - 'Burundi' 2021

Belgian painter Bram Kinsbergen has a tendency to absorb, analyse and integrate the spirit of our continuously changing society. However, he never deviates from one fundamental principle - always operate instinctively and never censored. In The Mental Traveler, Kinsbergen’s very first solo-exhibition in Everyday Gallery, he guides us through numerous improvised scenarios. Through these works, he ponders the question: where does innocently sensitive end and ignorantly insensitive begin?

The way in which one interprets the work shown above, Burundi (2021), inevitably depends on one’s personal knowledge and belief systems. A man floating in souvenir shop attire uncomfortably reminds us of his ties with the past. The message on his face, “It’s better to stay quiet”, therefore appears to be evident. Yet despite the obvious ignorance, we shouldn’t overlook what is crucial to draw this conclusion in the first place: one’s perception.

Despite being an artist, Kinsbergen is just as much an observer - one who travels through his own imagination. He considers his art as a medium to put things into perspective, provoke discussions and launch thoughts. Our ideas are constantly in motion which makes it hard to limit them. They are, like Bram Kinsbergen's works, the result of an ongoing process. The corrections made to the canvas are therefore no coincidence - and for once, we can be sure of that.
